Update 24 April 2007
This is now solved, take a look at the article here:
http://davidburden.com/blog/?p=162
Further to my posting here at the beginning of February it seems that I’ve run out of options to get TomTom Plus services to work through my TomTom 910, through Bluetooth through to the data service on the US T-Mobile service.
I’ve tried every combination and permutation under the sun to get this to work. I even had to bribe our Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES) administrators at work to help me out – but no luck.
I’m distraught to be honest. Two decent bits of kit that won’t talk to each other. Let me take you through some things I checked to save you the time.
First of all, I contacted TomTom customer support with a query. After 48 hours I got a poor reply on how to configure a Razr phone via Cingular. I have noticed however in the last couple of days they have updated their list of supported phones.
If you visit tomtom.com/phones you’ll see that hands-free calling is supported with the Blackberry Pearl 8100, nothing else.
I also phoned T-Mobile technical support. I spoke to a very friendly and helpful guys who spent probably 20 minutes with me – but we had no joy. The main thing we tried was tweaking the connection string each time. (Taking commas out, capitalisation, removing text in the quotes, etc) We also tried to enter wap.voicestream.com in the APN settings on the Pearl under Options > Advanced Options > TCP.
One thing I think everyone is in agreement about is that the APN to be used on the TomTom is wap.voicestream.com as the data plan is routed through this for all Blackberry devices.
The third thing I noticed was that because I was on a BES, some services were missing from my Bluetooth profile on my Blackberry Pearl. If you’re not on a corporate network, you shouldn’t have this problem, but by default Desktop Connectivity and Wireless Bypass are disabled via the BES administrator. These need to be activated by your friendly administrator.
Your Bluetooth Options screen should look something like this:
Device name: Blackberry 8100
Discoverable: Yes
Allow outgoing calls: Yes
Address book transfer: Enabled
LED Connection Indicator: On
Services:
Headset, Handsfree, Desktop Connectivity, Wireless Bypass
If you can’t see all these services, you’re probably on a restricted profile via your corporate BES.
So, that’s where I am at the moment, still without TomTom Plus services and not happy.
Two other little snippets that I’ve found in regards to the Blackberry Pearl recently. Even though I have a 1GB memory card, I can’t save any applications to it. This is causing me space problems on my Pearl as I currently have stacked it?above and beyond the standard applications with Newsclip, Google Maps, Opera Mini, Sudoku, Ka-Glom, Mail by Google and Instant Messaging. (All of these applications are fantastic by the way, especially Newsclip, Google Maps and Mail by Google)
Secondly, Microsoft Office Communicator for Blackberry doesn’t work on the Pearl. It’s a shame as it’s an application I used frequently on my?previous Blackberry. However, I think this is more of an issue of our BES being a few versions behind.

I have to say that after purchasing a tomtom go910 and realizing that my near 300 dollar phone (Blackberry Pearl) cannot get the plus service and my broken down 3 year old nokia 6230 could, i was upset. If you find any way of fixing this problem, pleeeaassee let me know.
I’ve been trying all different combinations of connection strings, dialing numbers, etc to get my TomTom Go920 to tether to my T-Mobile 8320 with no dice… I’d be interested in a solution as well,
p.s. i’m running 4.2.2.180 firmware which seems to be the problem
I had been trawling the web trying all combo’s of settings and finally have my blackberry 8100 paired with my TomTom 520 for phone calls, adress book and Tomtom Plus services including all the traffic updates.
I had been trying lots of different solutions I had read on the web and typing in settings etc etc with no luck. What I did was simply downgrading the software on the 8100 from the most current one which I had installed thinking it would solve the problem to the 4.2.1.66 Italian version. I did not have to type in any settings myself just did it automatically and hey presto.
I am really quite annoyed that Tomtom state that the 8100 is only suitable for Bluetooth phone calls and not data when clearly it can be. I am even more annoyed that Blackberry give you this functionality on an old update which subsequent updates dont allow. All in all I am pleased to have it sorted but thats a day of my life wasted that I cant get back. Good luck with it.
I think David’s point about over-freaked out BES admins is the one that’s most interesting here. I hadn’t considered that until just now, and suddenly had a penny-dropping moment when I read that and remembered how my company’s BES admin is totally unwilling (or is it unable?) to do things like actually open up the BES to allow my phone to run at it’s full capacity.
So, I think I will go back to Plan B, which was to just buy a second cheap phone and run that for the data. I’m not going to waste my breath trying to work with my ‘friendly’ BES admin. This is not TomTom’s fault, but rather the fault of the people I work for.
Sigh…
Finally got it sorted! Got my UK T-mobile BB8100 pearl and TTGO920 working with data.
1) Upgrade BB8100 to latest OS (currently 4.5.0.174)
Select UK, Then T-Mobile (UK) Contract
2) Upgrade TTGo920 to latest software
3) In the BB, go to Options, Advanced Settings, TCP
4) Delete any entries for APN, User and Password (note them down first if entries exist though)
5) Delete any pairing on the BB and the TT
6) Pair devices
7) If not automatically asked, go to “my tomtom services” to start data connection setup
9) It WILL fail at 65% – just wait
10) Choose to set up the connection manually
11) Accept all entries until you get to PASSWORD
12) Change password from “web” to “wap” (yes, they got the password wrong)
13) Voila.
