TomTom Plus services via BB Pearl at last!
24 04 2007My eternal thanks go out to Ed_NYC for solving this issue and passing on the details so that I can share.
Further to my posting here and here, we now have a solution to pairing the Blackberry Pearl 8100 with the TomTom GO 910 via Bluetooth and getting the Pearl to access TomTom Plus services. It’s been a long journey - but we’re now there. This appears here first, even TomTom do not have an update on this!
First, some prerequisites. This solution is for a Blackberry Pearl 8100, with a data-service tariff on the US network T-Mobile linking to a TomTom 910.
First, you need to ensure your Blackberry Pearl’s firmware is the latest version. Read my article here on how to upgrade your firmware. (Again thanks to Ed_NYC)
When you have it up-to-date, you need to take the following steps:
Ensure your APN settings on your Blackberry is set to wap.voicestream.com. To do this, go to Options > Advanced > TCP
You then need to pair via Bluetooth your Blackberry with the TomTom. This should be a straightforward step.
You then need to create the data setting profile by hitting the TomTom traffic item. If you don’t have a data connection already setup, it will start to take you through the steps to create one.
You need to select Blackberry 8100 and the USA option. When it comes to the connection type (T-Mobile (I), (II), (III), etc) you can click the manual button to create this from scratch.
The APN should be wap.voicestream.com
Username: {keep this blank}
Password: {keep this blank}
Select Automatic for both the IP/DHCP and DNS server option
Dial: *99#
Login script: +cgdcont=1,”IP”,”wap.voicestream.com”
The TomTom should now connect and you’ll be good to go.
Update: 15 January 2008 - Setting up AT&T Blackberry Pearl with TomTom Traffic
I recently moved my network service from T-Mobile in the USA to AT&T in the USA. Things seem much easier to setup to pair the Pearl with TomTom Traffic.
1. First check the firmware of your Pearl - I have v4.2.1.66 (Platform 2.3.0.57) - anything less than this might not work. You can always upgrade your handheld software by visiting the AT&T site at www.att.com/blackberry
2. Check your Blackberry plan with AT&T - you must have the extra teathered option in your tariff. I pay $59.99 a month for the Blackberry data and teathered modem option
3. Obviously - switch on Bluetooth on your phone and pair as normal with your TomTom
4. However, when it comes to the selections - do not pick the obvious (AT&T), choose the Cingular connection (not MediaWorks). You should not have to change any connections and you should be setup within seconds

This is very exciting news David… maybe you can take a couple of pics of the TomTom Plus services in action (perhaps not while your driving) and post them on your Flickr blog using your Blackberry.
Thanks David for the information. I followed them exactly as described and it worked like a charm! Good job!
Brilliant news! Now all I need is for someone to figure out how I do it in the UK via O2. However, going to try working through and see if I can adapt…
Hi David,
Just to let you know I copied your instructions on my Pearl in the UK on Vodaphone with my Tom Tom go 700. After trying just about everything else and being told it would not work I would not let it go! Anyway i did exactly as you suggested and now it works perfectly. Thanks very much for the info!
Hi David,
Thanks for the great tip. Just wanted to confirm that this works for Swisscom in Switzerland as well. Updated my Pearl with the latest firmware and set TCP settings to:
gprs.swisscom.com
Username: gprs
Password: gprs
And then on my TomTom Go 910 I just selected the default Swisscom profile and it worked like a charm.
The TomTom problem appears solved, so on to the next problem…getting Blackberry Pearl to work with jPT (Jon’s Phone Tool) on Mac OS X. Anyone solved this setup problem yet? I’ve tried everything I can think of, but cannot get JPT to actually dial the number so that it rings on the other end.
Just to let you know that I’ve tried the above in the UK on an Orange contract and it works fine. I now have connection to TomTom Plus on my TomTom 510 via my Pearl.
Thank you very much for putting in the effort!!
Scott, if you ever get anywhere with o2 and the pearl be sure to post, I’m still banging my head against a wall with it!
Could someone please post the settings for Uk vodafone (if known)? I am using “internet” with no username or password as the APN on both the blackberry and the TomTom.
The TomTom settings I am using are:
APN: internet
Username: {keep this blank}
Password: {keep this blank}
Select Automatic for both the IP/DHCP and DNS server option
Dial: *99#
Login script: +cgdcont=1,”IP”,”internet”
It doesnt work, though opera on the mobile does, so I know the APN is valid. Some people seem to be using WAP APNs - I have tried using ‘wap.vodafone.uk’ but still no luck and Opera on the phone doesnt work.
PLEASE help!
David, first thank you and Ed_NYC very much for your time and perserverance to solve this issue. I followed your instructions and it worked perfectly and I now have successfully paired my BB Pearl and TomTom 910 and all features work!
However, ever since upgrading my firmware (OS) to the 4.2.1.66 I lose audio during my phone calls. It is not a dropped call because the display still indicates ‘Connected’ but I can not hear them nor can they hear me. The only temporary fix I have found is to remove the battery……which is obviously a pain in the arse. But even after removing the battery the same issue will happen again where the audio is just lost. It is also a random type thing where some calls I’ll have audio throughout the conversation and some times it happens within seconds and others after a minute. I guess I’m saying that I have not really noticed any pattern.
I live in the USA (Indiana) so has anyone else experienced this same problem? If so, any suggestions or solutions that can be provided?
I was so excited about getting the units to pair and work but it is now very frustrating with the ‘lost audio’ issue. Any help and/or suggestions would be very much appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
Hi
I have my tt510 working after the advice BUT I no longer have SMS - give Java errors, I have deleted the vendor.xml. Im in UK on Orange network - Please help
Thank you
Donna
Wow, Superb,
I have just done the upgrade and it all works for me too….
Thanks , you are a lifesaver. Mike
I have a BB 8100 Pearl on Vodafone UK Contract and TomTom 700 which will not allow me access to Plus features on the TT. (Although the blue tooth hands free works well). I am not very experienced with these things but quite capable of altering the setting on both. I have already down loaded and installed the latest UK BB.
PLEASE can some one post the EXACT sttting for both BB Pearl and TomTom 700 to make things work. I’d be very appreciative.
David, thanks for the great work so far, I just hope it will lead to a solution for me.
Tony D.
I too performed the above procedure and all went well with one exception. After I connect to the TomTom server via Bluetooth through my T-Mobile Pearl, my MMS photo messaging will not send or receive. I can make the MMS work again after a battery pull. This same problem occurs when I tether the phone to a PC and use it as a modem. I think the MMS configuration used by the Pearl somehow gets temporarily overwritten. I have searched far and wide for a solution. Maybe I should flash the phone with the newer firmware?
This still will not work for me. I’m using an 8800 and an 8100. The 8100 has 4.2.1.66. The 8800 has 4.2.1.74.
On Friday night, the 8800 worked. I followed the instructions to pair it, and manually enter the settings and it was working fine. I disconnected it to try the 8100, now neither one works. I’m following these instructions exact. Does anybody have any advice?
Nevermind….I reset the TomTom and Blackberry, it works. Thanks!!
Neil, did you manage to get the Vodafone UK settings for the Pearl? I too am hunting these after a successful upgrade. Thanks!
Philip, please can you tell me what settings you used for orange - I have tried various combinations but no luck yet. Thanks in advance!
I’m also looking for the settings for a Pearl 8100 on Vodafone UK (contract)- I’ve tried modifying the above with no success - does anyone have the exact settings?
Has anyone successfully done these changes for a Blackberry 8100 and a TomTom (anymodel although I have a new 720)device and using Vodafone UK?
If you have, maybe you can post the entire preoceedure on here. I am sure there are lots of us pulling out our hair with this problem!
Hey David and all. I am UK based and on orange. I have installed the most recent version (4.2.1.96) and followed the instructions. Does not seem to work to me. The default login script has
at
in front of
+cgdcont=1,”IP”,”wap.voicestream.com”
Which is correct? Neither work for me but I would like to eliminate as many issues as possible. Can anyone else who is based in the Uk and got this working give me any tips?
Cheers,
Gareth
Is it worth documenting what Services need to be listed on the Bluetooth Options Screen on the BB 8100 for the TT Plus Services to work; for the Data Connection to be made? Does anyone know? I am on a BES so I bet my company has limited data access.
BB OS 4.2.1.103 on T-mobile in the USA.
I just wondered if anyone has managed to get this working with a UK O2 Pearl yet? I have tried (seemingly) every combination and am using v4.2.1.93 (Platform 2.3.0.77)
i have tt510 and pearl, i loose blue tooth connection when try to setup the tom tom plus sevices.
need your help
You need 4.2.1.66. I tried with many other versions and none work. It works fine with .66. For all UK users the default orange contract settings worked fine. I did not have to create a custom phone or anything. In fact, I did not even have to edit the TCP settings in the blackberry. Mail me at gareth at we7 dot com if you need any more info.
Hi there, thank you for all the help.
I have tried all these, and even updated my firmware to the latest version.
I am trying to pair up my blackberry with my tomtom one and the problem that I have is that the connection setting goes up to 65% then it stalls and tells me that the device is “Unable to set up your wireless data connection”.
I have followed all the instruction but still get the same message on my tomtom.
Does anybody know how to help me out with this?
Thank you.
Muchas Gracias!!! What a great tip! It worked flawlessly with our BB8100 T-Mobile USA phones and Tomtom 510s.
Thanks again!
I have a TT One XL Regional (UK) and Blackberry Pearl 8100 with Vodaphone UK but can’t connect to TT Plus Traffic services. The devices are able to pair using bluetooth but not able to connect with the error message ‘Unable to set up your wireless data connection’. Any help very much appreciated!
>> THOMAS (in Indiana, USA)
Initially, we too had the same problems you’ve experienced. Our first call was fine and clear, but we coouldn’t hear a thing on subsequent calls either through the phone or the TomTom GO510 speaker.
On top of this, I couldn’t browse the web either on the phone browser.
To resolve the issue, I ran at least two (2) diagnostic tests on each of our BB8100s. This resolved the conversation and data connection issues. Since then, the TomTom GO510 and our phones have been working fine -no problems (*knock on wood).
[...] Update 24 April 2007 This is now solved, take a look at the article here: http://davidburden.com/blog/?p=162 [...]
Hi David,
I have a Pearl 8100 from T-mobile US and a TomTom 910,
I did everything you explained but it doesn’t working, the bluetooth works perfectly but the tomtom is unable to connect to my BB pearl.
Any idea?
Thanks
David,
A fellow Brit here in the US. I have a Pearl and am looking at getting a ONE XL but live in Detroit and can not find anywhere that tells me if the TT Plus Traffic service is available in Detroit. I have asked TT but got no answer.
Do you know or know where I can find out?
Chris.
Verizon finally released the BlackBerry Pearl 8130. Has anyone gotten this to work with the TomTom Go 720?

Hi
I’m in UK with Sony-E P990i TomTom 910 Vodafone PAYT Sim card :
To Setup data connection =
piecing it all together from this thread and another one (www.expansys.co.uk) this is what you do
Access point APN pp.vodafone.co.uk
username wap
password wap
defaults to (Dial for a GPRS/UMTS network is) *99***5#
IP and DNS automatic
defaults to at+cgdcont=5,”ip”,”pp.vodafone.co.uk”
works absolutly fine !
why so hard to get there though - low marks for TomTom and Vodafone
hope this helps !

HELP!! Have the Black Berry Pearl from ATT&T. Does anybody know how to make it work with the TT Plus Services? It’s driving me mad!
I took the plunge - so I now have a bb Pearl (from Verizon) and a TomTom Go 720. I have scoured the web and found the following settings to get a VZW cell phone to talk to TomTom and pass data. Alas, there has to be some other setting I am missing. I’m confident I’m most of the way there. If anyone has any suggestions, I’m all ears (or eyes, as the case may be!) Here is what I have so far:
Username: mobile#@vzw3g.com (your 10-digit number)
Password: vzw
DHCP-auto and DNS-auto
Number to dial #777
Logon Script left blank.
So close, yet so far!

I’ve got a TomTom Go 910 and a Blackberry 8100 on T-Mobile UK. Have successfully paired for Handsfree calling. I have the 4.2.1.103 OS for the Blackberry having followed the advice here and on other forums but I cannot get the wizard past 65% either and cannot then use the traffic update services on TT. Works fine if I put the SIM in an old Nokia handset though. Ideas anyone ?
Like others I’m very interested in finding the APN settings for Vodafone with anyone who has this working on any BB. I’ve got BB 8310, managed to pair it with my TomTom 910 just can not get Plus services running. BB 8310 has version 4.2.2.146 of the OS. Found this link on TomTom support page but it did not help me but might help others http://www.tomtom.com/support/solution.php?GID=1&PID=232&SID=0&CID=217&Language=1&FID=3326.
David, thanks so much for this post, I am trying to get the Pearl working with AT&T wireless and a TomTom 920, has anyone been able to get the data services working with their 8100 Blackberry Pearl?
I’ve been trying for several hours now to pair my BB pearl 8100 with the Tom Tom GO 910, for the data, and after trying all the above suggestions, still unable to go beyong 65% on the set-up.
Any other suggestions?

Have tried the default in TT of general.t-mobile.uk
but no success with anything

I have had a devils own job getting TT710 working with Nokia E61 which operates on the Symbian OS. No one ever explains Access Points and Access Points Groups. However I found this site which tells you the UK suppliers GPRS settings and passwords. Hope it helps.
http://www.filesaveas.com/gprs.html
Dave,
I have a BBerry 8100 Pearl and I have a G920. I can pair and use as a handsfree device, but much like Peter (above), I can not get past 65% and all I am getting is the “Unable to connect” error. I’ve gone over your instructions and have reviewed others, over and over. I wish it were so simple…do you have any suggestions.
I am appreciative of your efforts in this. I thought forsure your advice was going to fix it…I feel like the loneranger with two pieces of extraordinary equipment that won’t work.
I hope to hear from you or anyone out there with ideas/advice.
Thanks much!
I just recently got the Curve 8310 with ATT; however, I have not being able to get the plus service to work with my tomtom 510. I tried different settings and downloaded the latest software for the device. The last thing I did was, once again tried the regular Cingular option on the tom tom 510 with the same results (65%). In addition, I have the unlimited data program on this phone with ATT. Is there another thing that I may be able do? OK, USA
I received your email regarding the particular plan to use with ATT. This is the plan that I currently have “BlackBerry Personal Add on 200 Msgs”. Should this one work as well?
I found a fix for the 8800 and AT&T!
You must change the 8800 ISP to WAP.
Go to the 8800, select options/advanced/TCP.
Then select network and view the WAP username and account.
Copy them to the tomtom when you select Cingular!
Go surfing!
For those using T-Mobile Uk Blackberry, you might want to check with custoemr care if you have the right Blackberry service books installed, and which APN that gives you access to, since there are a couple in use.
I have Blackberry 8310 with 5GB Data Plan and voice plan with AT&T. I do not have teathered option though.
I am unable to configure the wireless service with Tomtom Go 920 so that I can use phone data plan to get traffic updates etc.
I don’t see my phone model (Blackberry 8310) listed in the setup so I picked “other” phone model and then AT&T Wireless as a service provider. After a minute or two it came back with the “unable to set up your wireless data connection”. Then I tried the manual option and entered the following values that are in my phone:
APN: wap.cingular
Username: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
Password: CINGULAR1
Automatically get IP address and DNS server.
Dial: *99#
but it did not work. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks in advance
I have Blackberry 8310 using o2 network in the UK. Has anyone been able to find the necessary connection setting to make it work with TomTom Go 530, Traffic etc. It appears that TomTom can’t / wont help!
Cheers all
UPDATE: for BB Pearl 8100, latest OS v4.5 works with the instructions noted on this blog entry, AND the best part is that no more sudden-dead-silence calls.
Instructions above worked for connecting to a Blackberry Flip (8220) OS v4.6 and a TomTom 720. Even though my phone was not listed I used the BlackBerry 8100 model on the Tomtom device and followed the above instructions.
